What is the Cochlear Awareness Network?
The Cochlear™ Awareness Network is made up of hundreds of recipients and parents who act as Cochlear ambassadors, sharing their Nucleus® implant experiences, and providing information and support to others. This team of volunteers works to proactively educate individuals about how a Nucleus® cochlear implant can dramatically improve communication and quality of life for those with severe-to-profound hearing loss.
What does it take to be a volunteer?
Cochlear Awareness Network Volunteers ARE:
• Well trained
• Honest
• Compassionate
• Trustworthy
• Open-minded
• Dependable
• Team players
• Good listeners
What would I do as Cochlear Awareness Network Volunteers?
Through specialized volunteer training, the Cochlear Awareness Network helps potential and recent recipients understand the benefits and realities associated with the implantation process. CAN volunteers can also assist busy cochlear implant programs by assisting clinics in supplying information, answering questions, dispelling myths, and allaying fears.
CAN volunteers:
• Attend Cochlear Americas sponsored volunteer training.
• Increase public awareness about hearing loss, the benefits of cochlear implants, and who should consider pursuing an evaluation for candidacy.
• Tell others about their decision-making process and help potential recipients to consider whether a Cochlear Nucleus implant is right for them.
• Offer practical and emotional support and information to candidates and recipients.
• Act as Nucleus ambassadors, representing Cochlear at local forums and workshops.
• Spread the word about the benefits of the Nucleus system.
• Help set realistic expectations about the cochlear implant experience.
• Correct misinformation about the implant process.
• Help Nucleus implant centers by answering questions and providing perspective that only a fellow recipient, or recipient family member can offer.
